They had all been friends with Claire too, so there wouldn’t be any of that awkwardness because they understood how Joel was feeling.

“That’s a good idea,” Miranda agreed. “It will be good for you to get out and about again.”

Evie started coughing, distracting them from their conversation. It was a nasty hacking cough, and her face went pink with exertion.

“Evie! Mouth… hand!” Joel gestured, reminding her to cover her

mouth to try and stop her from coughing all over the other children who were playing on the carpet. “I think I should probably make a move.”

He drained the last, lukewarm dregs of his cappuccino, tasting the chocolate that had sunk to the bottom. He called across to Evie. “We’re going home in two minutes, Evie, so you need to finish up now, okay?”

Evie turned and nodded, pouting a little, but she didn’t argue. Joel picked up his and Evie’s things and started to put his coat on. “Evie’s been tired this week, so I think she could use some sofa cuddles this afternoon.”

“Okay.” Miranda stood; she straightened her skirt and picked up

her coat and scarf. “I have more Christmas shopping to do anyway, but it was lovely to see you.”

The tiny baby with the woman on the other sofa started to cry.

The unmistakable, impossible-to-ignore squall of a newborn baby made them both turn and look. The woman jiggled the baby, holding it up on her shoulder, and patted its back until its scrunched-up face relaxed and the noises stopped. Joel turned back to Miranda and caught her staring.

In that unguarded moment, the expression of naked longing on her face was painful to see.

“No luck yet?” he asked softly, so only Miranda would hear.

She shook her head, snapping her attention back to him. She

smiled, a little too brightly to be convincing. “I know I just need to be patient.” She shrugged, wrapped her scarf around her neck, and avoided Joel’s eyes. “But I’m not awfully good at that.”

Joel didn’t know what to say. It was true. Miranda had never been known for her patience. She was the sort of person who flew through life, tackling everything head on. She saw obstacles as things to be overcome, and she rarely failed to do anything she was determined about. It must be intensely difficult for her to sit back and wait for her body to cooperate about something she wanted so badly.
